This 1936 Ford Station Wagon was acquired by Bob Anderson in February 1968 while living in England. Discovered in a very original state, retaining its original wood body and much of it’s dark green paint, the Wagon was understood to have been used as a staff car by the military, a common use for the woodies which made there way overseas. As such, this V8 Ford was a rare right-hand-drive example, and remains so today, still addorned with its DN 20 registration plates.

The Wagon made its way back to the states with Bob in the early 1970s and spent much of its time in dry storage awaiting restoration. In October of 200X, the project was ready to begin and the car was taken completely apart in preparation for a full nut-and-bolt restoration.

The woodwork was entrusted to Nickels Automotive Woodworking in Traverse City, Michigan with the directive to save and restore all of the original wood on the Wagon. The cosmetic paintwork was done by Restorations Unlimited II to a spectacular level in black, and the various plating was undertaken by Finishing Touches, both in the Chicago area. The interior was completed by Ernie Lazaar in California, though importantly, the impressively original rear bench seat was retained as is. The unique sliding side curtains which stow on the Wagons roof were properly restored as well.

With the idea of making the V8 a better performer by modern standards, a late year Mercury engine was sent to Dave Tatum for a complete rebuild and mild hot-rodding. The chassis frame and running gear was given to Frame Up Wheels Works in Illinois, who installed the engine and 5-speed gearbox.

Multiple photo albums document the Ford’s restoration, the outcome of which is a perfectly executed hot-rod Woodie. The Wagon is tasteful, understated and a delight to use. The outward appearance is almost entirely 1936 Ford, but underneath the Wagon benefits from  desirable flathead speed equipment making it the ideal driver’s car.

Since completion, the Wagon has been well used, including participation in the Pebble Beach Motoring Classic with Bob, Marianne and the family. Remaining in superb restored condition, a testament to the quality of the work performed, we are privileged to off the V8 Woodie on the Anderson’s family’s behalf.
